History

Baccarat is one of the oldest casino games in the gambling  world. Baccarat was initially documented in the 1400s when it appeared in France.  The name Baccarat is derived from the Italian word “Baccarat” which means zero. This is due to the fact that the certain cards such as the King, Queen, Jack and Ten, all have a value of zero. It also refers to a hand that has a total of zero, such as a six and a four – as this also equals zero and is thus Baccarat.

Despite its documentation in the 1400s, it took over 500 years to develop into one of Europe’s leading casino games. Baccarat was also popular amongst French Royalty. There were several variations of this game at this point in time. Chemin de fer was a popular variation in Europe, while Punto Banco was a popular variation in England.  Three variations that have remained popular up till now are Baccarat Chemin de far, Baccarat Banquet and Punto Banco. All of these variations have the same basic premise, except the amount of cards that are dealt. Just like the Baccarat was popular with the French royalty, it attracts VIPs and the high-rollers as they like the high limits that are typically on this game. It is not uncommon for huge amounts to change hands during a few rounds of Baccarat.

Baccarat’s most recent evolution is that it can now be played online. One can do this at their own leisure, in the comfort of their own home.
